Fourth week in KL (evaluation)
Dear Friends and family,
It’s Monday the 3rd of March. Exactly 4 weeks ago I landed in Kuala Lumpur to do my internship. So it’s time for an evaluation! Counting over 200 visitors to my guestbook surprised me and I want to thank all of you for showing interest in my adventure!
Life, house and work
A comment of a local was that the wrong view of Malaysia was given in my blog. To make sure that I send the clear message I’m only writing about the weird, funny, different etc. stuff I experience. It would be boring for you to read about the usual. So far I’m definitely enjoying my time in KL. The people are very friendly although they say that’s because I’m a foreigner, what I don’t mind. It’s just about the fact that they are friendly and most of them have a heart in the good place, regardless religion or background. The kitchen is excellent with different influences from mostly China, India and Malaysia. The weather is good although it has been very hot the first few weeks, but it’s cooling down now because of the hard rain. One moment you are in the pool getting sunburned and a few hours later you can better stay inside because of a thunderstorm. So far no problems with crime, I have only felt unsafe ones in a township and don’t think this is the best place to walk around for a white guy. Clubs are great, with good music and last weekend I even talked to the Dutch DJ Marco of the club Loft, who never wanted to go back to Holland anymore. Everything is cheap so I live a standard higher than I’m used to do in Holland, going out for dinner twice a day, taking a taxi everyday etc. I think it’s really easy to get used to this high-class life, it will be more difficult to get back to my “poor” student life in Holland. My place in Bangsar Baru (suburb of KL) was definitely a good pick. The area is great, I hang out in the evenings and weekends with my housemates and I have a good sleep every night. My housemates are easygoing and have kind of the same interest as me. As last my work, although the level isn’t as high as I was hoping, I do learn a lot especially about the culture of doing business in Asia, which is mostly with Chinese. I only knew Chinese from a restaurant so this is a great way to have a look into their “kitchen”.
Like I sad everything is cheap, ok not everything, alcohol is because of the tax really expensive. I haven’t got my hands on the illegal alcohol delivery service yet, so the only solution is less drinking, which is good for my beer belly! Because I enjoy a luxury live style and had to buy a lot to settle down, I have spent too much so far.
So as you can read, I enjoy myself big time and just can’t imagine what I all would have missed by staying back home. This is an advice for everyone who is thinking to do something like this: just do it and don’t be a chicken!
Groeten Bas
P.s. 1 upcoming weekend I will be in Singapore
