Langkawi

Dear Friends and family,

Last weekend I went for a 4-night trip to a tropical island called Langkawi

Where is Langkawi
Langkawi is situated on the west coast of Malaysia right at the border of Thailand. It takes an hour to fly to from KL. Langkawi is a group of in total 99 islands with 2 main islands and a lot of small ones, some of them are only visible with low tide.

What makes Langkawi so special
Langkawi became a UNESCO area in 2007 to protect the beautiful nature. You have to think about the Bounty commercial when you think about Langkawi. Beautiful beaches, white sand, palm trees, easy going people etc. Since 1989 is the island tax free to stimulate tourism. This changed a lot for the island that was called a hidden treasure before. Now a day’s tourism is the main boost of the local economy on the island.

What I have done
First of all I haven’t done much special! After being in KL for a long while, working a lot and clubbing in the weekend I was looking forward to a real beach holiday.
On Wednesday afternoon I ran away from my work to take the plane straight to Langkawi. Together with Tim, Sven, Robert and Dagmar (Sanne was planning to arrive on Friday) we landed at 11.30 PM. Tim had arranged a resort to stay, where no reservation was made, by our surprise. We decided to have a look around and this brought us to a simple but clean cabin at the beach.
From here we enjoyed the beach, drank a lot of cocktails at the local hippy bar and crossed around with our rental scooters on the beach. With low tide the beach was like a motorway where you could go easily 100 km/h!! All legal during the day but it was only low tide during the night :)

The next day’s I enjoyed the beach more, had some bad and really good food, drank more cocktails, danced the night away, hit the waves with a jet ski and got a nice tan. I will spare you the details but we turned a few bars upside-down with our good mood and high quality Dutch dances as the “polonaise” and world famous sitting row dance.  We had a Dutch dinner arranged by the local Iris pub, the dinner is called “hutspot” a mix of smashed potatoes, carrots and onions. It’s one of my favourites dinners and eating something familiar again made me enjoying every bite!

Last night
On the last night (Saturday) we took a little boot to a remote monkey island where a full moon party was organised. Sitting there on the beach with good music and dancing people on the background, sipping a beer I took a moment for myself. Looking at the stars and waves that lighted up when they hit the shore (I have been told this is due to the phosphor in the water) I realised that I couldn’t have made a better decision than doing my internship in Malaysia. From KL it’s incredible easy to do a holiday like this, where some people have to work a year round for. Running my mind over almost 2 months here made me feel the luckiest man of the world, for a moment…
We came back the next morning at 10 to eat some breakfast with our new Polish friends. After this I had big plans for the rest of the day, which literary landed up in the toilet. The trip back was terrible and I had to stay home for 2 day’s because of an infection. At the moment it’s Wednesday and I’m still not fully operational, probably because I ate a little fish from the BBQ at the full moon party.

Highlights
